Asparagus aethiopicus.  Native to South Africa, these hardy ferns have amazing root systems that store water allowing mature established plants to be quite tolerant of infrequent watering.  You may lose some fronds and needles but their resilient nature makes them an easy starter plant that can grow into a nice bush best in a hanging planter high up.
